The same base

The A290 and Renault 5 E-Tech share the AmpR Small platform, a 52 kWh usable battery, 400 V architecture and 100 kW rapid charging. They also share the five-door shape and a 326-litre boot. From there, Alpine changes the car.

What changes in the A290

  • Wider tracks and suspension tuned by Alpine.
  • 19-inch wheels and 225/40 tyres.
  • Four-piston Brembo front brakes with 320 mm discs.
  • 180 and 220 hp versions.
  • Sharper steering and response.

The result is not an R5 with stickers. It is firmer, noisier on broken roads and more fun on a twisty road. In exchange, it uses a little more energy and sacrifices comfort.

Range and daily use

The R5 homologates up to 255 miles (410 km) in the 52 kWh version. The A290 claims 236 miles (380 km) in the GT and 226 miles (364 km) in the GT Performance and GTS. The gap is small on paper and clearer in winter, when both consume more.

If your priority is going far at low cost, the R5 is more rational. If you want feel, the A290 justifies the premium. Neither is roomy in the back.

Price and equipment

The A290 starts above the equivalent R5. That difference pays for chassis, brakes, wheels, motor and finish. On the used market, always compare equivalent versions: an A290 GT is not the same as a top-trim R5.

Verdict

  • R5: cheaper, more range and more comfort.
  • A290: better feel, more grip and a presence the R5 does not have.
  • Both: the same space limits and the same dependence on a good charging network.

There is no universal answer. The right question is not which is better, but how much you value the chassis and how much the price.
