2023: the A290_β preview
In May 2023 Alpine unveiled the A290_β concept, a styling study with a central driving seat and no screens that previewed the proportions, the X-shaped light signature and the language of the future electric hot hatch. Raphaël Linari designed the exterior. The production car kept the attitude and the silhouette but returned to a conventional five-seat, two-row layout.
13 June 2024: debut at Le Mans
Alpine revealed the production A290 on the eve of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It was the first model in its electric “Dream Garage” and the first production electric Alpine. The initial French range had four levels — GT, GT Premium, GT Performance and GTS — plus a launch edition, the Première Édition, limited to 1,955 units as a tribute to the year the brand was founded.
French production
The car is assembled in Douai (Renault ElectriCity); the electric motor is built in Cléon and the battery joined French production in summer 2025. Six units were built in 2024 and 9,608 in 2025. It is the most accessible Alpine and the brand’s first electrification step, ahead of the A390.
2025: the A290 Rallye
In July 2025 Alpine unveiled the competition version, developed by Viry-Châtillon and assembled at the Dieppe workshop. It keeps the 220 hp and 300 Nm, and adds an FIA roll cage, a ZF limited-slip differential, six-piston front brakes, ALP suspension, 18-inch wheels and a sound system linked to the throttle. It is sold complete for €61,490 excluding VAT (€59,990 at launch, in 2025) and competes in the A290 Rallye Trophy; competition packs are sold separately (setup kit, €3,090; four-wheel pack, €1,025).
2026: A290+, Collection and Trophy
The 2026 update adds One Pedal driving, a battery produced in France and a new Collection trim with Blanc Nival or Bleu Orage Mat paint, Snowflake wheels, grey calipers and chrome details. In the UK the range is marketed as A290+. The one-make A290 Rallye Trophy started in 2026, joined by the Regional Trophy.

GT (180 hp)
The entry point. A 130 kW/180 hp motor, 285 Nm, 0-100 km/h in 7.4 s, 160 km/h and up to 380 km WLTP. 19-inch Iconic wheels, heated front seats, a 10.1-inch Alpine-Portal with Google, Arkamys audio, automatic climate control, reversing camera, adaptive cruise control and Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyres. It is the most efficient version and the most daily-oriented.
GT Performance and GTS (220 hp)
Both share the 160 kW/220 hp motor and 300 Nm: 0-100 km/h in 6.4 s and 170 km/h. The GT Performance adds Snowflake wheels, Pilot Sport 5S tyres and optional Telemetrics Expert. The GTS adds two-tone Nappa leather, a nine-speaker 615 W Devialet system, Alpine Drive Sound and Telemetrics Premium. The GTS is the best-equipped version, not the most powerful: it shares its powertrain with the GT Performance.
GT Premium and Première Édition (2024)
At launch, the GT Premium paired the 180 hp motor with GTS comfort equipment: Nappa leather, Devialet, a two-tone roof, blue calipers, a heated steering wheel and wireless phone charging. The Première Édition, based on the 220 hp GTS, was limited to 1,955 units and added a numbered plaque, floor mats and specific wheels, with three exclusive liveries. The French 2026 range replaces these variants with the Collection.
A290 Collection (2026)
A new trim available with 180 and 220 hp. It comes in Blanc Nival or Bleu Orage Mat with a black roof, 19-inch Snowflake wheels, grey Brembo front calipers, body-coloured wheel arches, chrome monograms and a heated black leather steering wheel. It is a styling and equipment version, not a new powertrain.
Prices and availability (October 2026)
In France the range starts at €34,670 (GT, after the €4,830 CEE rebate) and reaches €40,670 (GTS). In Spain the GT starts at €39,000, the GT Performance at €42,200 and the GTS at €45,000. In the UK the GT+ starts at £30,245 including the £3,750 grant, the GT Performance+ at £32,745 and the GTS+ at £34,245. These are reference prices that vary by market, taxes and incentives: always check the official configurator.

Capacity and chemistry
A 52 kWh usable NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) lithium-ion battery, around 55 kWh gross according to EV Database, 400 V and 184 cells in a 92s2p layout. It sits under the floor between the axles, lowering the centre of gravity without stealing boot space. The warranty covers 8 years or 160,000 km with at least 70% capacity. Alpine prioritises energy density and performance here rather than a cheaper LFP chemistry.
Rapid charging
It accepts up to 100 kW DC. Alpine quotes 15-80% in 30 minutes; in practice the average curve is around 75 kW and a 10-80% session takes about 31 minutes. Peak power is held for only a few minutes and depends on battery temperature. When a charging stop is programmed in the navigation, the car preconditions the pack to arrive at the optimum temperature.
Home charging
The onboard charger is 11 kW three-phase and 7.4 kW single-phase. At 11 kW, 0-100% takes about 5 h 45 min; at 7.4 kW, about 8 h 30 min. It does not accept 22 kW AC: the limit is the onboard charger, not the wallbox. A 6.5 m Mode 3 cable is included and the port is on the front left fender.
Range and consumption
WLTP range is 380 km for the 180 hp GT and 364 km for the 220 hp versions, with consumption of 15.8 and 16.5 kWh/100 km. Owners report 290-340 km in summer and 160-210 km in winter with the heating on. At a 120 km/h motorway cruise, consumption exceeds 20 kWh/100 km. The standard heat pump and preconditioning reduce the winter penalty.
V2L, V2G and home use
With the appropriate adapter, the A290 supplies up to 3.7 kW to tools or appliances (V2L). It is also compatible with V2G and V2H through a bidirectional charger, although availability depends on the market and supplier. It does not replace a home installation: it needs a compatible charger and, in some countries, grid operator approval.

Base and geometry
The A290 shares the AmpR Small platform with the Renault 5 E-Tech, but Alpine redesigned the front subframe to widen the tracks to 1,576 mm, fitted a multi-link rear axle and recalibrated the steering, springs, dampers and anti-roll bars. The under-floor battery lowers the centre of gravity. Weight distribution is 57/43 and the wheelbase is 2,534 mm.
Suspension and brakes
MacPherson struts with hydraulic compression bump stops at the front; a multi-link layout at the rear. Front brakes are four-piston Brembo calipers on 320 mm discs; rears are 288 mm. The 19-inch wheels wear 225/40 R19 tyres: Michelin Pilot Sport EV on the GT and Pilot Sport 5S on the 220 hp versions. The competition Rallye runs EVO Corse 18-inch wheels, six-piston front brakes with 350 mm discs and a ZF limited-slip differential.
Weight and dimensions
Weight starts at 1,479 kg in the GT and is around 1,554 kg for the 220 hp versions in running order. Gross vehicle weight is 1,950 kg, payload around 467 kg and maximum towing 500 kg, braked or unbraked. Ground clearance is 151 mm and the kerb-to-kerb turning circle is 10.2 m. These are large-supermini figures, not pure sports car ones.
Driving electronics
Save, Normal, Sport and Perso modes, switchable stability control, an OV overtake button (up to 10 seconds of maximum power) and an RCH paddle to adjust regeneration. The 2026 range adds One Pedal. There is no adaptive suspension, rear-wheel steering or limited-slip differential on the road car: the set-up is fixed and mechanical.
How it drives
It is a front-wheel-drive car with 300 Nm in the 220 hp versions. The steering is quick and the chassis handles more than its height suggests, but traction control intervenes early in the wet and the front tyres saturate under a full-throttle launch. In the dry it is agile, stable and very comfortable day to day; it is not a throttle-steer rear-drive drift machine.

Proportions and stance
3,997 mm long, 1,823 mm wide (2,020 mm with mirrors), 1,512 mm tall and a 2,534 mm wheelbase. The tracks measure 1,576 mm, the overhangs are short and the wheel arches are muscular. 19-inch wheels fill the arches and the roof falls away towards the rear. It is a compact, planted shape, wider and lower than the Renault 5.
Light signature and details
The full-LED headlights draw a double X, a nod to the tape stripes on rally cars. The front bumper has vertical intakes, the rear bumper incorporates a diffuser and the roof a spoiler. The rear door handles are hidden in the C-pillar, where the French flag also appears. Alpine monograms and Iconic or Snowflake wheels complete the look.
Colours and finishes
At launch the choices were Deep Black, Alpine Vision Blue, Matte Tornado Grey and Pearlescent White. The 2026 Collection adds Blanc Nival and Bleu Orage Mat, both with a black roof. Matte grey and blue need specific care: they cannot be polished with abrasives and are best protected with paint protection film or a ceramic coating from day one.
Personalisation
The Atelier Alpine offers blue and red signatures, blue wheel centres, blue or red brake calipers, chrome or anodised blue monograms, the Tricolore pack and the option to delete the model name from the tailgate. The Première Édition added exclusive liveries and a numbered plaque. This is factory personalisation, not a dealer add-on.
An Alpine, not an R5
It shares its architecture with the Renault 5, but changes the bonnet, wings, bumpers, lights, wheels and wheel-arch treatment. The stance is wider and lower, and the interior uses specific materials and details. Alpine presents it as the first model in its electric “Dream Garage” and it inherits the attitude of the 2023 A290_β.

Driving position
A three-spoke, flat-bottom wheel inspired by Formula 1, with a red OV button and an RCH selector. Behind it sits a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster; in the centre, a 10.1-inch screen with Google built in. The centre console, inspired by the A110, groups the RND controls, the drive-mode selector and an armrest with storage. Climate control is automatic and keyless entry is standard.
Materials and comfort
The GT uses grained blue textile with an embroidered logo and French flag; the GTS adds two-tone blue and grey Nappa leather with contrast stitching and monograms. Front seats are heated, the heated steering wheel is optional, ambient lighting has four zones, and there is wireless phone charging, two USB-C ports, a 12 V socket and Bluetooth. The Nappa steering wheel is flat-bottomed with a centre marker.
Seats and boot
Five doors and five seats. The boot holds 326 litres (300 with the Devialet system) and expands to 1,106 litres with the rear seats folded. There is no frunk. Rear space is tight for tall adults and access is not especially generous; owners describe it as a car for four people with light luggage, not a family car. The load lip is high and the tailgate is manual.
ISOFIX and family use
Three ISOFIX points: the front passenger seat and the two rear seats. Owners report that a child seat fits behind the driver if the driver is not too tall. There is no panoramic roof or third row, and the roof is not homologated for a load. It can work for a small family; for teenagers or five adults on a long trip, it falls short.
Audio and cabin life
The GT gets Arkamys audio; the GTS gets a nine-speaker, 615 W Devialet system with a subwoofer and Alpine Drive Sound. The cabin is well insulated for a sporty supermini, although the 19-inch tyres generate road noise at motorway speed. Owners criticise the lack of standard cupholders and grab handles.

Alpine-Portal with Google
A 10.1-inch central screen with Google built in: Google Maps, Assistant and Play. It supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The system receives over-the-air updates and can plan routes with charging stops and precondition the battery. The digital cluster is 10.3 inches and shows driving, energy and ADAS information.
Telemetry and sound
Alpine Telemetrics Expert logs driving, consumption, regeneration and dynamics data; it is optional on the GT and GT Performance. On the GTS, Telemetrics Premium adds lap timing and logging. The Devialet system (nine speakers, 615 W and a subwoofer) includes Alpine Drive Sound, a synthetic soundtrack that follows the throttle. The GT gets Arkamys audio.
Driver assistance
Adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go, emergency braking, lane keeping, safe distance alert, automatic lights, high beam assist, reversing camera and front, rear and side parking sensors. Alpine quotes up to 26 aids. The Safety Pack adds blind spot warning with intervention and safe exit warning; the Driving Pack adds further driving functions.
Connectivity and energy
The My Alpine app can schedule charging and climate control, check status and find charging points. The car supports 3.7 kW V2L with an adapter and V2G/V2H with a compatible charger. The heat pump is standard. It supports Autocharge on CCS chargers and Alpine has announced Plug & Charge, although availability depends on the network.
What it does not have
There is no head-up display, 360 camera, panoramic roof or adaptive suspension. The cluster is digital but does not project onto the windscreen. The instruments and screen come from the Renault Group, with Alpine graphics and services. There are no autonomous driving functions either: the A290 is a level 2 assisted car, not a hands-free one.

Running costs
At 16 kWh/100 km and a domestic tariff of €0.20/kWh, the cost is around €3.20/100 km; public rapid charging multiplies that. Maintenance is simpler than on an ICE car: no oil, oil filter or belt, but there is a cabin filter, brake fluid, coolant and tyres. British owners describe insurance as cheaper than an equivalent petrol hot hatch, although it varies widely by country and profile.
Warranty and servicing
A three-year or 100,000 km warranty in Europe (UK: three years or 60,000 miles), with unlimited mileage in the first two years. The battery is covered for eight years or 160,000 km to 70% capacity. Alpine sets the service plan by market; owners report annual services, with the cabin filter every two years, brake fluid every three and coolant every six. The 12 V battery typically lasts four to five years. Servicing can be done at Renault dealers, not only Alpine.
Range and weather
Owners report 290-340 km in summer and 160-210 km in winter with the heating on. The heat pump, preconditioning and a smooth right foot reduce the penalty. At a 120 km/h motorway cruise, consumption exceeds 20 kWh/100 km. For long trips, plan 20-30 minute stops at 100 kW chargers and do not arrive below 10-15%: the charging curve slows sharply above 75%.
Reported issues
Owner forums mention My Alpine app failures, charging schedules that fail to wake the car, a heater whistle, trim rattles, delicate matte grey paint and fast front-tyre wear. The 12 V battery and software errors are the most repeated warnings. They are not universal, but check them at delivery and document them during the warranty period.
Buying and delivery
Check tyre pressures (33-35 psi; dealers sometimes deliver at 2.6 bar in ECO mode), wheel torque (125 Nm), blue centre caps if ordered, locking wheel nuts, installed updates and that the app and charging cable work. Confirm the car charges on both DC and AC before driving away. If you fit PPF, tell your insurer: some policies do not cover a filmed car. There is no spare wheel, only a puncture repair kit.
Who is it for?
For someone who wants a fast, comfortable, stylish city car with occasional rear-seat use. It is not a family car: rear space is tight and the boot is 326 litres. Nor is it a track car: there is no limited-slip differential or adaptive suspension. It is a daily electric hot hatch with a very Alpine point of view. If space or range is the priority, the Renault 5 E-Tech or a compact EV makes more sense.

Frequently asked questions
The questions owners and buyers ask most about the A290: range, charging, versions, space, warranty, prices and family use. Short answers, with links to the full file.
What is the A290’s real-world range?
WLTP range is 380 km for the 180 hp GT and 364 km for the 220 hp versions. In real use, owners report 290-340 km in summer and 160-210 km in winter with the heating on. At a 120 km/h motorway cruise, consumption exceeds 20 kWh/100 km.
How long does it take to charge?
On DC, 15-80% takes about 30 minutes at 100 kW. At home, 0-100% takes about 5 h 45 min at 11 kW or 8 h 30 min at 7.4 kW. The curve slows sharply above 75-80%.
Can it charge at 22 kW AC?
No. The onboard charger accepts 11 kW three-phase and 7.4 kW single-phase. A 22 kW wallbox will work, but the car will only draw 11 kW. For trips, rapid charging is DC (CCS) at up to 100 kW.
What is the difference between GT, GT Performance and GTS?
The GT has 180 hp and prioritises efficiency and comfort. The GT Performance and GTS share 220 hp and 300 Nm; the first adds sporty equipment, the second luxury (Nappa leather, Devialet, Telemetrics Premium). The GTS is the best-equipped, not the most powerful.
What is the OV button?
It is the Overtake button on the steering wheel. It releases maximum power for about 10 seconds; after that it needs a recovery period. It does not increase power beyond the homologated figure: it removes the temporary delivery limits.
Does it have One Pedal driving?
The 2026 range has it as standard. Earlier cars are not guaranteed to have it: Alpine introduced it as a 2026 feature and there is no official confirmation of retrofitting for every car. If it matters to you, check the software version and model year.
Does it have V2L and V2G?
Yes. With the appropriate adapter it supplies up to 3.7 kW to tools or appliances (V2L). It is also compatible with V2G and V2H through a bidirectional charger, although availability depends on the market and supplier.
Is it a family car?
It has five seats and a 326-litre boot, but rear space is tight and access is not generous. It suits four people with light luggage or a small family with young children; for five adults or teenagers, it falls short. It has three ISOFIX points.
How much does it weigh?
Around 1,479 kg in the GT and 1,554 kg in the 220 hp versions in running order. Gross vehicle weight is 1,950 kg and payload around 467 kg. It is heavier than a petrol supermini, but the low centre of gravity compensates.
What tyres does it use?
225/40 R19. The GT runs Michelin Pilot Sport EV; the 220 hp versions run Pilot Sport 5S. Owners recommend 33-35 psi, not the 2.6 bar ECO setting sometimes used at delivery. The Rallye uses 18-inch wheels.
Can it tow?
Yes, up to 500 kg braked or unbraked with the optional tow bar. It is not designed for large caravans.
What warranty does it have?
Three years or 100,000 km in Europe (UK: three years or 60,000 miles), with unlimited mileage in the first two years. The battery is covered for eight years or 160,000 km to 70% capacity. Servicing can be done at Renault.
Is it safe?
Euro NCAP awarded four stars in 2024: 80% adult occupant, 80% child occupant, 76% vulnerable road users and 68% safety assist. It has emergency braking, lane keeping, adaptive cruise and up to 26 driver aids.
Where is it built?
It is assembled in Douai, France, within Renault ElectriCity. The electric motor is built in Cléon and the battery has been produced in France since summer 2025. It is the first production electric Alpine.
What is A290+?
It is the name the 2026 range uses in the UK. It is not a different car: it coincides with the update that adds One Pedal, a French-built battery and access to the full British grant. In France and Spain it is still called A290.
Is there a Rallye version?
Yes, but it is a competition car, not a road trim. It keeps 220 hp and 300 Nm and adds an FIA roll cage, a ZF limited-slip differential, six-piston brakes, specific suspension and 18-inch wheels. It costs €61,490 excluding VAT and races in the A290 Rallye Trophy.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the market and incentives. In France it starts at €34,670 (GT, after the CEE rebate); in Spain at €39,000; in the UK at £30,245 with the grant included. These are October 2026 prices: check the official configurator before buying.
Is it worth it over the Renault 5 E-Tech?
The A290 offers more power, a sharper chassis, stronger image and specific equipment; the R5 is cheaper, more practical and has more range in some versions. If you want driving feel and exclusivity, A290; if you want value and space, R5. There is no single answer.
Does it have Google, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto?
Yes. The 10.1-inch screen has Google built in (Maps, Assistant and Play), over-the-air updates and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The digital cluster is 10.3 inches.
Does it have a panoramic roof, 360 camera or head-up display?
No. The range does not offer a panoramic roof, a 360-degree camera or a head-up display. There is also no adaptive suspension. It does have a reversing camera, parking sensors and a Safety Pack with blind spot and safe exit warnings.
How many units have been built?
Six units were built in 2024 and 9,608 in 2025. Production started in Douai in 2024 and accelerated with the 2025 range. The Première Édition launch model was limited to 1,955 units.
What is the Première Édition?
A 2024 launch series limited to 1,955 units, based on the 220 hp GTS. It added a numbered plaque, floor mats and specific wheels, with three exclusive liveries. Today it is only available on the used market.
What colours are available?
At launch: Deep Black, Alpine Vision Blue, Matte Tornado Grey and Pearlescent White. The 2026 Collection adds Blanc Nival and Bleu Orage Mat, both with a black roof. Matte finishes need specific care and must not be polished with abrasives.
Can it use Tesla Superchargers?
In countries where Tesla opens its network to third parties, yes, through the Tesla app and with the car’s CCS connector. Not all sites are open and pricing depends on the network. In Europe the A290 uses CCS Combo 2.
Does it have a frunk?
No. The A290 has no front boot; the space under the bonnet is used for electronics and vehicle systems. The charging cable is stored in the boot.
Is it front-wheel drive? Does it have a limited-slip differential?
Yes, it is front-wheel drive. The road car has no limited-slip differential or adaptive suspension; the competition Rallye does have a ZF limited-slip differential. The road chassis is fixed, with a multi-link rear axle and Brembo brakes.
