The first purchase is not a wheel
Before spending on styling, sort the basics: charging cable, key cover, tyre pressures and a proper clean. The A290 does not need much to look better; it needs protection.
Paint protection
- PPF: strongly recommended on matte paint. Cover the bumper, bonnet, wheel arches and sills. Ask about the price and tell your insurer.
- Ceramic coating: makes cleaning easier, especially on black. It does not protect against stones.
- Matte paint: use specific products, without abrasive waxes. A normal polish can leave shiny patches.
Inside the car
- Key cover: the plastic key marks easily.
- Cup holder: the A290 does not offer a generous solution; find one that does not block controls.
- Boot tray: useful for keeping the carpet clean.
- Dashcam: choose one that does not drain the 12 V battery and route the cable through the headliner.
- Boot net: holds shopping and stops rattles.
Charging
A good quality Type 2 cable, a bag for the boot and an RFID card are more useful than an exotic adapter. If you buy a home charger, prioritise one with load management and updatable firmware.
Compatibility with R5 and A110
The A290 shares its platform with the R5, but not every body part is interchangeable. A110 wheels may have a different offset and brake clearance; do not buy them without a test fit. The A290’s own fitment is 5×114.3 with a 73.1 mm centre bore and ET38: check that the wheel matches the PCD and bore and that the offset clears the Brembo calipers. Cheap aftermarket parts can fit badly and affect the warranty.
Tuners: the Milltek case
If you want a deeper visual change, Milltek Design’s wide body kit for the A290 and R5 is one of the most talked-about options: reversible, no cutting and from £2,000 + VAT. It comes with its own homologation, insurance and warranty questions; we cover them in Milltek Design: the wide body kit for the A290. For everything else — suspension, wheels, brakes and power — there is a separate map: Tuning: suspension, wheels, brakes and power.
What I would not do
- Unapproved spacers.
- Non-approved lights or lamps.
- Permanent OBD dongles.
- Steering-wheel covers that block the airbag.
- Any modification your insurer does not cover.
The rule is simple: if you do not know how it affects safety or warranty, do not fit it.
